About Thoughtful Calc

Free home and yard calculators for the US, made by Shadow Paths, LLC.

Thoughtful Calc tells you how much to buy for a project: paint, drywall, mulch, pool water and chemicals. The goal is a number you can take to the store, not a best-case figure that sends you back for a second trip.

Real-world numbers, not best-case defaults

Many calculators assume ideal conditions: one coat, perfect coverage, no waste. We build around what happens on a real job, like patched walls, textured ceilings, cut-offs and spillage. Every calculator page shows its assumptions and sources, plus a section called "Why our numbers are more realistic" that explains where our result differs from a typical calculator, and why.

How each calculator is made

  1. Research. Before building, we study competing calculators and the common ways they go wrong.
  2. Sourcing. We check each number against its source, list the sources on the page, and say so when a figure is our own planning estimate or one we couldn't fully confirm.
  3. Review. Each calculator is checked by separate review passes for errors in its logic, wording and sources before it's published.
  4. Automated tests. Tests check the math, and they run again before every change goes live.

Review schedule

Each calculator page shows the date its numbers were last reviewed. We re-check the numbers and sources at least once a year, and sooner if a source changes or someone reports a problem.

Tell us how it went

We tune these numbers from real results, so we want to hear how a project actually turned out: how much you used, whether you ran short or had extra, anything that surprised you. Every answer has a "Tell us how it went" link that fills in your entries for you, or email contact@thoughtfulcalc.com. If a result looks wrong, say so. We check every report against the sources and fix the page if it's wrong.

Results are estimates, not professional advice. See our terms and privacy policy.
